October 24th Weekly Update

Downloads have been updated to 22d, which should fix *most* of the problems I've had reported.

I mostly took the last few days off, aside from advertising, but I still got a few little fun things done recently!

You can now use the healing flask on allies, but only during the rest options - throwing potions around in combat seems unwise LOL. Mana Blade can now access all Longsword skills properly as well, due to some backend fiddling.

Also, got a couple commissions going; a butterfly mommy for the deepwoods, a CG for a certain pink goof, some new weapon icons (and hopefully more soon!), a new monster, and more to come. Also, hob gramps was finished too.

This update will mostly be writing, and not nearly as much gridlock as the previous. So I'm gonna aim for a month or so, maybe slightly less, and a *lot* more content.

Keep up the awesome work!

Thanks! Looking forward to a lot more writing soon!

Question for Cryswar:  I have been putting together a mock-up of what I think could be a GUI for DD's combat screen.  Would you be interested in a terrible depiction?

If yes, there is something further to consider.  I have the habit of playing games, and thinking to myself "the controls could be better, and the gameplay..." well, you can guess.  Aside from a rainbow nightmare, I can also propose my thoughts on revised gameplay.  Problem is, I am not sure if they are any good, and whether a proposal to rework your ruleset would be irritating - you already spent a ton of time trying to figure out stuff.

Feel free to say no.   Ultimately, my what-ifs are for my personal amusement, and the odds of actually being useful are long at best.

I'm always open for suggestions, but I will confess that the next few months will probably be writing-heavy rather than mechanics. So no promises on when, or if, anything will happen - even if I agree with every idea you have.

That is perfectly fine - I find that most (good) games take at least two years to cook, and that is assuming if you had a paid team.  Divine Dawn is probably more a passion project than a commercial one, especially since this seems to be your first project beyond modding.    This game is a sort of crossroads for you as a creator, since many questions would have to be answered.   "How much time and money do I want to spend like this?", "Would writing a book be better than coding a game?", "What kinds of game mechanics interest me?", and so on.

Anyhow.   IIRC, a big part of game development is not just making things, but destroying them.  About 80% of the development time apparently goes into systems and assets, while the other 20% is the actual content.  Mechanics being what they are, essentially are living creatures that have to be born, bred, and replaced by a better generation that gels more naturally with what you intend.   On the plus side, the lessons learned will likely translate to future projects in a cleaner form.  Kinda like how to make a readable novel, you have to abandon stuff to focus on what you learn to be important.

Most of the ideas that I put forward are going to need surgery if they are going to live.  Hoping for the best, but expecting a terminal outcome.

Mechanics have certainly been a huge timesink haha - maybe I should have just made a VN... good learning experience though!

Pink goof? Is that Sam, Maya or Siofra? Or is this someone that's got brand new CGs on the most recent upload? Ashley doesn't have pink hair, Sarah's not a goof, I would NOT call Metatron a goof, Celica's got green hair, Aspasia is grey and not a goof anyway...

I was referring to Amnelis. Introduced in recent update, CG undergoing for next.

Ah OK. Honestly, my first though when I saw pink goof was "Qum!!! Oh wait, that's a different game..." and I was trying to figure out who the goof might be, because MC's got a LOT of goofs that hang around him! Haven't replayed it recently so wasn't aware of new character yet (note to self, replay to see all new fun stuff, now that crazy period is over). Given how many "say first, THEN think" people the MC either has or will have, I'm half expecting a scene where the MC wanders off in a huff because he's frustrated with all the think-last people and someone has to find him!

Oh yeah, the opening got completely revamped - might be fun - but not required to enjoy new stuff.

Amnelis is pretty naive and has zero sense of self-preservation, but is fairly intelligent and very insightful, so she's a mixed bag. Less of a goof than Sam, maybe.

MC just has to spend more time with mommy Aspasia, or upcoming mommy butterfly, to restore his soul.
